New Wave: A musical exploration

What is New Wave music? Well, it's somewhat hard to come up with a good working definition, sometimes you know it when you hear it, and more often New Wave bands straddle other genre lines. Basically: New Wave music is a definitive genre of the 1980's, coming out of the first-wave punk movement of the late 70's. Common characteristics of New Wave, aside from punk influences, are the use of synthesizers, diversity, and a penchant for musical experimentation.
I've tried to gather some of the most obvious examples of the genre, plus some hidden gems. This is not a comprehensive list of the genre.
